String Theory

Math has always been one of my favorite subjects. It’s special because of its unique ability to give you an answer, instead of leaving you wondering. If you know what numbers to input where in the equation, you can be pretty sure that you'll get the same answer as anyone else. I don’t want an answer that can be written off as “your opinion,” so basically the opposite of most kinds of art.

Wire Wrapping

Wire isn't necessarily a fiber, but it can be treated the same as other string when making jewelry. Instead of knots, a loop will provide the same structure and still hold its shape. You have base wires instead of nails, but all three mediums have a lot of similarities.

Macrame

With macrame, you're working with a pattern of knots, row by row that neatly and strategically develop into a piece. Patterns can be written, and a plan can be made before starting with the intent to actually follow it.

String Geometry

String geometry in a lot of ways is just as predictable. If you set up the base nails, there are only a finite number of ways that the resulting piece can turn out. You can alter the colors, or the starting nail and pattern you choose to follow, but it can't exist outside of the form you predetermine.

I like string art because I often find that I can spend too much time considering all of the possibilities of a project and never get started. But I can use this medium as a way of limiting my imagination and diving right in.  Below are a few different string techniques.
